for everyone

In 1996 a Spanish, American and Indian climber's attempt to conquer Everest was filmed by IMAX cameras. As great as the pictures were (though I only saw it on DVD), it's even more amazing to see how the movie was made. 5 sherpas (sadly never pictured in the movie) hauled up a 42 pound camera to the top of the world. 9 seconds of IMAX film weighs one pound, so unsurprising that every second filmed on the mountain was included in the movie. Definitely worth 45 minutes of your life.

I just read Into Thin Air, which was about the disaster that occurred on the mountain that very same season. In fact, the book talks about how the IMAX team was quick to offer their own people and resources (e.g., oxygen tanks) to the teams in trouble to help them get down, even though it put their own attempt at risk.

It was an excellent book and made me wish I had seen this movie will it was playing in an IMAX theater.

That accident is part of the movie too. They show a climber with a face that's totally black because of frostbites. The guy survived (mod his hands and nose) and one of the bonus materials on the DVD is an interview with him.
